Día de los Muertos

El Día de los Muertos es un día de fiesta que se celebra en México. Este día de fiesta enfoca en reuniones de familia y amigos para rezar y recordar a los amigos y familiares que han muerto. La celebración ocurre el 31 de octubre hasta el 2 de noviembre, consiste en 3 días. Tradiciones conectadas a este día de fiesta incluye; la construcción de altares con ofrendas para honorar a los difuntos, las calaveras, los clavelones, comidas y bebidas favoritas de los difuntos, y visitas al cementerio.

Las celebraciones del Día de los muertos, tienen su origen en las culturas indígenas de los aztecas. En muchas regiones de México el 1 de noviembre honora a los niños y a los bebes que han muerto mientras el 2 de noviembre honora a los mayores. Muchas veces se refieren al 1 de noviembre como Día de los Inocentes o Día de los Angelitos, y el 2 de noviembre como Día de los Muertos o Día de los Difuntos.

La gente va a los cementerios para comunicar con las almas de los difuntos y construir altares privados, que contienen las comidas y bebidas favoritas de los difuntos. También hay fotos y recuerdos de los difuntos. Durante la celebración de 3 días, los familiares limpian y decoran los sepulcros con ofendas y clavelones. En México, este nombre a menudo está reaplazado con el nombre Flor de Muerto. Estas flores se usan para atraer las almas de los difuntos a las ofrendas.

The Spanish word "calavera" means "skull", and by extension "skeleton". In the present case it designates prints in which all the characters are skeletons miming every conceivable activity in human existence. Most of these prints were prepared for sale around All Souls' Day, November 2, when it is traditional to sell figurines, toys, cakes, candy, etc., in the form of skeletons, and to make elaborate offerings to dead relatives. Posada used his calavera prints as social reportage, as minifestos and as political and social satire.

These bicyclists each represent a contemporary newspaper company between 1889 and 1895. All are presumedly "racing" to cover a story, or perhaps "competing" in the marketplace.

Catrina represents the "fashionable lady" of the times. Posada reminds us that beauty and fashion are ephemeral.
Below: "Calavera Siglo XX" is the calavera of the twentieth century. As the "old" century departs, the new "baby" calavera of the twentieth century rides in on his back!

A cemetery, presumably crowded with victims of the then fairly new electrical conveyances. There were many disasterous accidents, one or which involved the future artist Frida Kahlo, who spent most of the rest of her life in a wheelchair due to a horrible trolly accident in which her spine was broken in several places. Frida Kahlo later became an internationally acclaimed surrealistic artist who was also known as the wife of Diego Rivera, a famous muralist.

How to Make a Day of the Dead Altar

The altar includes four main elements of nature - earth, wind, water, and fire.

Earth is represented by crop: The Mexicans believe the souls are fed by the aroma of food.

Wind is represented by a moving object: Tissue paper is commonly used to represent wind.

Water is placed in a container for the soul to quench its thirst after the long journey to the altar.

Fire is represented by a wax candle: Each lit candle represents a soul, and an extra one is placed for the forgotten soul.

To make a Day of the Dead altar, you will need the following items:

1. Photo of our Loved One. At the center of the altar is a photograph of the loved one to whom the altar is dedicated. It is decorated with momentos that reflect the individual.

2. It is customary to prepare a feast of foods that the spirits will enjoy. Tamales, mole, pan de muerto, and seasonal fruits are traditionally used, as well as foods that were favorites of the deceased.

3. Marigold Flowers (Cempasúchitl). In addition, yellow and orange marigolds are lavished upon the altar. Marigolds are used because of their abundance and their robust aroma.

4. Sugar skulls and calacas (skeletons). The presence of whimsical calacas offer those in the physical world something tangible that captures the spirit of the loved one.

5. Votive Candles. Purple represents pain, pink celebration, and white hope. Use whatever colors feel right as there is much room for personalization.

6. Grooming items. A bar of soap, a towel, perfume, and the like are placed on the altar in the belief that the dead ones have been on a long journey and would like to refresh themselves for the celebration.

Other items such as paper cut outs, images of saints, personal effects of the honoree are placed at the altar.

Salt is considered the spice of life and is one the staples that should be left at the altar.

It is believed that the dead consider it disrepectful to be greeted by grieving at the altar.
